1ST TEAM

07/05/11 - Hesketh Bank 2-2 Crooklands Casuals

Due to our confirmed relegation there was an air of relaxed determination settling around Station Road as we said farewell to our 5 year stay in the 1st division. The club were delighted to welcome back midfield engine Richard Hill after a spell with district league neighbours Tarleton. New boy Craig Taylor started his first game and partnered John Ascroft up front.

The 1st half was something of de-ja-vu! We were on top for long peroids and our 3-5-2 formation was getting the best out wing backs Josh Brierley and Kevin Cox. We took a deserved lead when the Crookland's keeper up ended John Ascroft in the box. Josh Brierley went top of the goalscoring list with his 5th penalty of the season (his 8th overall). We continued to dominate play and consolidated our lead when the returning Richard Hill doubled Crookland's deficit. The last ten minutes of the first half saw us begining to tire and Crooklands started to weasel out the odd sniff at Karl Sutton's goal.

If the first half was de-ja-vu then the second half threatened to turn into a recurring nightmare. John Ascroft was replaced by Stepehn Biggs and the side was forced into a 4-4-2 formation. We began to drop deeper and deeper as the hard working midfield began to tire. Eventually Crooklands found their way back into the game, taking their equaliser from a softly given penalty. At 2-2 you couldn't help feel that we were once again going to succumbe to a late loser. However lead by the sturdy experience of Andy Cope and Morgan Dodgson the defence held their line and allowed our forward players to create space and begin to turn the game in our favour. At the final whistle a draw was probably a fair result.

Morgan Dodgson and James Smith should be commended for their efforts over the last five fixtures. We've probably been at our best during these games and with a little more luck perhaps we would have avoided the trap door. I sense the seeds of real positive anticipation for next season. Rumours of returning players combined with a decent end to the season has dulled the pain of relegation. Well done to all the players who have fought hard and always worn the shirt with pride. I'm certain that pride combined with quality and confidence will see us return to division 1 as swiflty as possible.

Thanks to everyone who has read these match rpeorts over the season. One day I'll get round to adding match photos - any volunteers email me! All the best to everyone at the club over the Summer and lets all look forward to another grueling pre-season!

30/04/11 - Haslingden St. Marys 3-2 Hesketh Bank

Since Morgan Dodsgon and James Smith have taken the helm they have been cursed by late goals that have seen at least a point turn into another wasted afternoon. Today the sum was simple - win and stay in the survival race, lose and a bottom two finish is certain (and probably relegation).

A strong side took to the field and immediately it was evident that Haslingden were already thinking about their free summer Saturdays. They were given a classy wake up call when our attacking play earned us an opening goal, a neat finish from 16 yards gave us all the belief that victory and subsequently survival was a possibility. Just as we settled into a rytham a harsh deflection resulted in the ball bouncing over keeper Karl Sutton's dive and nestling into the net, 1-1. Before half time a poor clearance opened the door for Haslingden to find their way around the offside trap and the move was completed with a sweetley hit half volley that rattled the onion bag. At half time the score was not in our favour, but the performance still gave us more than a sniff of hope.

In an attempt to win the game the team switched to a 3-5-2 formation. This left us slightly open at the back but with a win being our only option it was a necessary risk. Strong performances from Andy Cope, Josh Norgate, Kevin Cox and Ben Goodson kept us in the hunt for a result both in attack and defence. When Ben Goodson equalised with 15 minutes remaining the chance of victory was once again back on the agenda. Brian Livesey had the opportunity to give us the lead with just minutes remaining but his effort went wide of the target. As we pressed forward it was another mistake which gifted Haslingden their winner. The final whislte went and the solomn state of reality spread across the team.

In many ways this game summed up our season. At times we have been competitive and brilliant. We have created chances and been comfortably on top in many fixtures this season, then suddenly we will make not one, not two, but three or more suicidal mistakes in a game which means to pick up 3 points we need to find 3 or 4 goals.

It has been a long and difficult season and this relegation will hurt many of us but it is now almost a certain reality (only and unlikely league restructure would save us from the drop). The fact is that we haven't been anywhere near good enough and the responsibility for this lies with the players, the management (excluding the caretakers of the last few fixtures) and the administrators. At least we can now look forward to next season and learn from this season's mistakes as we will attempt to make a swift return to 1st division football.

Next week we will try to finish the season on a high with our final fixture against Cumbrian side Crookland Casuals with a 3.00pm kick off at Station Road.

25/04/11 - Hesketh Bank 1-5 Longridge Town

After two last gasp defeats the 1st team would be looking to get their survival challenge into full swing with an Easter Monday win against a Longridge side who have fallen only a few points short of promotion. The added incentive for the home side was that if fellow strugglers Turton were to beat table topping Slyne-with-Hest and we were to lose against Longridge then we would be relegated.

A sluggish start saw us 2-0 down before we could catch our breaths and it seemed that we would be in for a long afternoon. Mike Watson lifted the spirits when he pulled one back for the struggling 1st eleven. Those same spirits were dampened when poor marking and sheer good luck for the away side saw them go 3-1 up after some generous deflections from a corner kick. Despite the gap in league position and points the 1st team settled and threatened the skillful Longridge side with some energetic counter attacking from Josh Norgate and James Green. At half time we paused at an uncertain 3-1 in arrears.

The second half was full of battling intent and we once again threatened a well organised Longridge back four. Josh Brierly was enjoying one of his best performances since Christmas and almost created a clear cut opportunity for John Ascroft. Despite our efforts we made mistakes that were punished by the league's top goal scorer.

At the final whistle it finished 5-1 and we waited with baited breath to here news of the Slyne v Turton fixture. As Slyne won the match it means that with two games to go we simply have to take maximum points. We also have to hope that Turton draw or lose in their final fixture against Hawcoat Park if we have any chance of avoiding relegation to the 3rd tier of the West Lancs League for the first time sinces its formation.

Our final away fixture of the season is a must win game againsttHaslingden St Marys, this Saturday 30th April with a 3.00pm kick off. Your support is very much appreciated!

19/0411 - Hesketh Bank 2-3 Burnley United

For the second game running the 1st team's survival hopes were dealt a blow by a late winner. The game was a cliched tale of two halfs and our semi-final conquerers once again stole the goal that would earn them the victory.

More returning players slotted neatly into the starting line up and the 1st half was an example of what could have been in what has otherwise been a very difficult season. We dominated possesion and nulified Burnley's long ball lump. On the 15 minute mark John Ascroft opened the scoring with a precise left foot strike that whistled past the outstretched keeper and into the bottom left corner. Burnley reacted but were clearly rattled by a strong 1st team display. The home side bagged a second when Josh Norgate's cute first touch allowed him to volley the ball over the oncoming Burnley number 1. At half time it was difficult to tell who was pushing for promotion and who was scrapping for survival.

The second half began with an unfortunate and revealing tactical foul that left one of our key playmakers unable to continue. The challenge deamed only to deserve a yellow card seemed a clear indication that the first half performance had affected the away side. This substitution combined with a simple long ball by the goalkeeper seemed to swing the momentum Burnley's way. After completing a 2 goal comeback that was threatened when substitue Chris Barron hit the post the away team finished the job with a superb strike that left keeper Karl Sutton no chance of stopping.

This defeat could derail our survival challenge but with the players on show and the quality of our play I think we now have a better chance than we have had all season in avoiding the drop. Another defeat yes, but a step in the right direction? We'll find out on Monday.

Our next fixture is on Easter Monday against Longridge Town at Station Road with a 3.00pm kick off.

17/04/11 - Hesketh Bank 1-2 Hawcoat Park

A new look management team took charge of a much more familiar looking 1st eleven plus a couple of new editions. With Morgan Dodsgon taking up a player manager role the captain's armband was handed to Adam Birkby who was partnered in defence by the returning Sean Nightingale. Mike Watson slotted in alongside Tom Mamby in attack.

Immediately Hawcoat where aware that they faced a completely different challenge than the one they steam rollered through the week before. Mark Harrison and Josh Norgate both had half chances to give Hesketh Bank the lead. After a very even half the two sides went into the break all square.

The second half would provide the afternoons drama. It began well with Miek Watson adding his second in his second game for the Amber and Blacks. Unfortunately as is often the case with teams near the bottom fortune was not in our favour as Morgan Dodgson headed over his own goalkeeper Karl Sutton to give Hawcoat an undeserved equaliser. When Karl Sutton brought down a Hawcoat striker just inside the box the referee immediately pointed to the spot. With just minutes to go Hawcoat went 2-1 aheah after converting the penalty.

At full time the dissapointment was obvious but the silver lining is one worth finding. If we produce the same performance in our remaining fixtures then surely we will give ourselves a strong chance of staying in the league. Its tight at the foot of the table and it seems whoever can notch up a couple of wins will earn their place in next season's first division.

09/04/11 - A SATURDAY TO FORGET

All the main detail from a chaotic Saturday are recorded below.

Morning - 1st team manager Andrew Burns resigns as 1st team manager.

Midday - Due to half the 1st team being in Amsterdam all squads are spread very thinly and only 3 regular 1st team players travel to Barrow with a group of willing youth team players.

The Game - Hawcoat Park are 3-0 ahead at half time and after the 1st team have a player sent off the score finishes 10-0. The Reserves pick up a useful point at Longridge Town.. The A Team are beaten 1-7 by Muldoons.

5 TO FORGET

26/03/11 - Wyre Villa 5-0 Hesketh Bank

After our excellent result at Turton the previous week Nipper Burns was looking to increase our survival chances with a similar display against a team with just two league games remaining. With several injuries the team was left with just the bare eleven players. Although not 100% fit Adam Birkby returned to replace the injured Tony Sergeant. Kevin Cox also returned to slot in alongside James Green and Adam Birkby in a back 3. Midfield saw the returns of Mark Harrison and Jay Wright, while John Ascroft replaced the missing Tom Mamby up front and partnered the in form Mark Pinckard.

In a game that was decided by 5 goals it was far from one way traffic. The 1st half saw the away team gain some decent possession but Wyre Villa's oncoming midfield players had too much time and too much space to manipulate the ball into threatening positions. This combined with a stunning strike meant that Wyre Villa would go into the break 2-0 ahead.

With simply no options Nipper Burns instructed the side to increase the competition by giving Wyre far less time on the ball. For the 1st half an hour of the second half the 1st team showed their will to compete and had the lion's share of the possesion, territory and chances. A feisty 45 minutes should have seen a Wyre Villa player sent off for raising a fist but instead ended with several yellow cards. As the boys tired and thoughts of next weeks semi-final began to take over Wyre Villa completed their convincing victory with 2 late goals.

Due to the lack of personell the 11 that took to the field were left at the mercy of fitness and cicumstance. Although they competed for portions of the game a combination of things saw our downfall on the day. This is a game to forget as we head into the semi-final we must learn the lesson from our trip to Wyre Villa - be hard to beat by making the opposition work for the ball - we showed it at Turton and away at Millom. Hopefully we learn quickly, very quickly.

Next week is our much anticipated Semi-Final contest with Burnley United. This will be played at the neutral venue of Westhead Road, home to Croston Sports Club. Kick off is at 3.00pm. Show your support for the team and come along!

SWEET REVENGE MEANS THE RACE IS ON

19/03/11 - Turton 1-3 Hesketh Bank

Just one week ago we suffered a 4-0 home defeat that could have derailed the survival challenge and commited us into a mentality that would simply see us relegated. Football, as is so often proved, is 50% in the mind and that is were the 1st team built their foundation for the team's first league victory of 2011.

A much changed team travelled to the West Pennine moors to face a buyoent and confident Turton side. A squad of 12 included a still unfit Tony Sergeant, partnered in central defence by Jack of all trades Josh Norgate. Captain Morgan Dodgson moved into midfield alongside the returning Mike Watson. Mark Pinckard joined Tom Mamby up front while Josh Brierly slipped back onto the left side of midfield. Karl Sutton returned to guard the goal.

Lead by skipper Dodgson the 1st team showed dogged determination and refused to give Turton an easy ride. The back four remained resiliant and organised while the midfield broke up the opposition's possesion. As we battled our way into the game we began creating our own chances. Thanks to some excellent play by our right sided players Mark Pinckard managed to battle his way in between the giant Turton center half and their oncoming keeper and lifted the ball into the awaiting goal, a well earnt opener. After seeing off a Turton surge the half time whistle was blown.

The second 45 saw another early upsurge of attacks from the home side. Once again the backline and midfield kept the opposition at bay. In a half of few chances for the 1st team Josh Norgate scored our second with a cheeky free kick. He managed to bend the ball round the outside of the wall and past the despairing dive of the Turton keeper. Minutes later we found ourselves 3 ahead with a close rnage finish from Watson. The home team scored a consolation when one of their numerous 'Stoke' like long throws found the head of Josh Norgate and the ball went over Karl Sutton and nestled in the net.

The final whistle blew and instead of a mass outcry of delirious celebration the 1st team seemed satisfied that they have been reminded what winning a league game feels like and that more importantly it is well within their capabilities. Hopefully this is the begining of a run that can keep us in the middle tier of the West Lanc's Football League.

ITS GETTING SERIOUS

12/03/11 - Hesketh Bank 0-4 Turton

With 3 teams fighting to stay out of the two relegation places this was a bottom of the table battle that simply couldn't be lost. On arrival the Turton players looked very familiar. That familiarity was confirmed as it became apparent that many of them were part of the successful Stoneclough Reserve team that thwarted Nipper Burn's reserve side in last season's Reserve division 2 promotion race. With the state of the opposition placed firmly in the back of the mind the management decided to change formation and apply a 3-5-2 to players available. Tony Sergeant was missing through injury while Josh Norgate was suspended and Kevin Cox was unavailable. In came captain Morgan Dodgson in the middle of the back 3 alongside Adam Birkby and James Green. Tom Mamby returned to play in attack while John Ascroft dropped back into the 3 man central midfield.

With both defences looking comfortable and dominant the early chances fell to the homeside as Eoin Bond and Tom Mamby both went close inside the 18 yard box. Turton opened the scoring with a goal that became typical of the afternoon. Our advanced wing backs became vulnerable and stretched our back 3, consequently an advancing Turton midfield player found himself free to score past the returning Henry Heighton. Just like last week the 1st team were hit with a sucker punch just seconds from the half time whistle as once again Turton's width beat ours. Despite Heighton's hand tipping the ball out of the path of the awaiting striker the ball deflected off another advanced Turton player who knew little about his team's deflected second goal.

After a rallying cry at half time the 1st team were 3 down just moments after the break when once again Turton's wide players had time to cross the ball and scored from just a few yards out. Despite the scoreline the boys on the pitch kept pushing for goals and had chances to at least troule the away side. After a low free kick was intercepted Turton were able to break and score their 4th and final goal of the afternoon,

On relflection this dissapointing scoreline was offensive to some of the battling performances on show. Both goalkeeper and the back 3 come out with plenty of credit as I have yet to witness such a solid performance by defenders who have come off the pitch conceding 4 goals. While we came away without scoring we were at least creating chances. However there is no point papering over the cracks, a game that was decided by which team was more effective in wide attacking positions doesn't hide the fact that if we are to avoid the drop it requires every man in an Amber and Black shirt to give everything they have for the cause, otherwise next season Division Two beckons.

MILL HILL MAULING

05/03/11 - Mill Hill St Peters 4-1 Hesketh Bank

The 1st team suffered a set back in their bid for Division 1 survival. On the same day when fellow strugglers Croston Sports and Turton scored a precious point a piece we suffered a cruel but deserved defeat against Blackburn based Mill Hill St Peters. Morgan Dodgson and Tom Mamby were missing from the team that beat Millom in the cup on our last outing. Brian Livesey slotted back into centre midfield while Josh Brierly replaced Eoin Bond in left midfield, Bond moved to his favoured center forward position.

A tricky strike pairing gave the 1st team's back four a torrid time in the early exchanges which culminated in an early opener for the home side when a corner wasn't cleared and was slotted home after a deflection off goalkeeper and center half. In what was a rare 1st half period of possession the away side found an equaliser as Eoin Bond neatly finished to make it 1-1. Mill Hill continued to over run midfield and stretch our back line but it was another set piece that allowed them to regain their lead. Once again the 2nd ball wasn't dealt with and Mill Hill scored from close range.

The game was soon put beyond the away side early in the second half when the 1st team were found 2 against at the back and the 2 Mill Hill strikers beat the 2 Hesketh Bank defenders. From this point on the game began to turn. We started to gain more and more possesion and with 10 minutes remaining we were rewarded with a Josh Brierly goal, it seemed a comeback was on the cards until the referee consulted the Mill Hill linesman and concluded that there was an offside. Minutes later Mill Hill added insult to injury and scored the 4th.

The visitors had every right to be angry with the dissallowed goal as the tide of the game was certainly with the amber and blacks but on the whole it was a dismal afternoon that quickly needs to be forgotten because next week the 1st team have a preverbial 6 pointer against bottom side Turton at Station Road with a 3pm kick off.

LAST GASP THUNDERBOLT SENDS US INTO THE SEMI'S

12/02/11 - Millom 2-3 Hesketh Bank (President's Cup Round 2)

After the good fortune to receive a bye into the 2nd round the official defence of our Presidents Cup crown began at Cumbrian side Millom. Our previous trip to the Lakeland side this season ended in an embarrasing 13-4 defeat. For this fixture though the 1st team boasted a significantly stronger side.

The away side started the stronger and were duely rewarded when a powerful Tom Mamby run left him one on one with the goalkeeper, despite the keeper's reaction save the Millom defence couldn't stop John Ascroft converting the rebound. Mark Harrison showed our competitive intent with a series of hard yet fair crunching tackles in what was swiftly becoming a classic cup tie. As is often the case with Millom sides they packed the midfield and as a result the Hesketh Bank backline was left outnumbered when the home team equalised from a precise 16 yard volley. Both sides continued to press and saves where made by both the Millom keeper and our own Karl Sutton. At half time the teams went in 1-1.

The second 45 saw a change in the pattern of the game. We began to win the midfield battle and Millom's strikers were left increasingly isolated. At 1-1 Tom Mamby went through on goal but his attempt to take the ball round the goalkeeper was thwarted by the impressive Millom number one. The game then fell foul for the visitors after a poor refereeing decision awarded Millom a trhrow in. Straight from the throw the attacking Millom striker laid it off to his forward partner who cleanly slotted home to make it 2-1. As the 1st team looked likely to once again narrowly lose a fixture Nipper Burns changed formation and rolled the dice. 16 year old Stephen Biggs was given his first team debut and tall centre half Adam Birkby was sent upfront as the 1st team went direct. With 3 minutes remaining a Josh Norgate corner deflected into the path of captain Morgan Dodgson who volleyed home the equaliser from 2 yards, the ecstatic 1st team celebrated and with just minutes remaining the tie looked certain for extra time.

It is not unusual to see the name Birkby on a Hesketh Bank scoresheet and older brother Daniel would have been impressed with his younger sibbling's stunning 91st minute winner. Adam Birkby was told to remain in his advanced position as Nipper Burn's gambled on a late winner. The centre half cushioned the ball with his thy 30 yards from goal and on the run he connected sweetly with his right boot which sent the ball up and over the stranded Millom keeper. As Birkby ran to the bench to celebrate he was mobbed by delirious team mates as the 1st team snatched victory from the jaws of defeat. Seconds later the referee blew the final whistle and the celebrations began as the 1st team booked their place in the semi-finals of the Presidents Cup.

Despite the dramatic nature of the victory the whole team fought hard for 93 minutes and on the balance of play probably deserved the victory. It would be a cliche to suggest that this could kick start our season because with our precarious league postion it simply has to. As we look forward to the semi-final draw the 1st team's focus reverts back to picking up important league points with a home fixture against Hawcoat Park next Saturday with 3pm kick off.

A POSITIVE PERFORMANCE ENDS POINTLESS

08/01/11 - Hesketh Bank 1-3 BAC/EE Springfields

A grim January afternoon was made worse by our 7th 3-1 defeat of the season. Andrew Burns had a full squad to pick from and our strongest 11 took to the field against a BAC side who have already had an excellent campaign. We started positively with some neat football that while remaining to feet was also direct. Unfortunately our early posession counted for nothing when the BAC number 11 struck home to make it 1-0. The away side's lead lasted just 2 minutes after an absolute stunning strike by Mark 'Caffer' Harrison who modestly commented during celebration "Well, he was off his line wasn't he!". A blow came for the home team when Jordan Smethurst was taken out of the game after a wreckless challenge damaged his ankle. Utility man Josh Norgate came on to fill his position in central midfield. Shortly before half time BAC went 2-0 up when they scored an almost carbon copy of their opener. At half time the score paused at 1-2.

A positive team talk gave the home side a boost and the belief that the points could be snatched was shared amongst the players. These hopes where dashed 15 minutes into the half when poor marking gave BAC a free header from a corner and their 3rd and decisive goal. The rest of the 2nd half was typical of an early January fixture. Slow and lathargic but with bursts of action. Despite some probing attacking play by Josh Norgate and striker Tom Mamby the 1st eleven couldn't manage a reply. At the final whistle their was widespread dissapointment amongst the squad as for the second game in succession there was a feeling that we were worth more than a defeat. The post match team talk was positive, reserved and far from a panic. The team moves onto to next week's important home tie against another Prestonion side Longridge Town with a 2pm kick off.

BARE ELEVEN'S BRAVE BATTLE ENDS IN DEFEAT

13/11/10 - Slyne with Hest 3-1 Hesketh Bank

Eleven players in Amber and Black took to the sticky surface in the small village of Slyne on a bright Saturday afternoon. Some trouble with directions caused the kick off to be put back 15 minutes and considering the lack of subs and the league positions of both sides you would have been forgiven for fearing the worst for the away side.

A strong and experienced back four kept the busy Slyne strikers at bay with numerous strong tackles and did their best to fortify Karl Sutton's goal. As we built a strong foundation the more creative players began to find space to play. Jordan Smethurst, Eoin Bond and Brian Livesy all found space to spread the ball around the park. Our efforts where rewarded on the 40 minute mark when Mark 'Caffer' Harrison didn't give up a lost ball that was spilled by the keeper and passed into the path of the oncoming Eoin Bond, 1-0. Thoughts of a half time lead where dashed when poor marking gave Slyne a headed equaliser.

In the second half the home side made some subsitutions swapping quality with yet more quality. Despite some brave efforts to keep the league leaders a bay it was Slyne who would take the lead. The circumstance certainly didn't stop the 1st eleven from advancing on the home side's final third. A Smethurst volley was blocked by a very sore Slyne defender. As the game came to its conclusion Slyne added a 3rd to secure the points.

The players who took to the field where commited to being hard to beat and its safe to say that we were, just not hard enough. Once again the same form against lesser opposition will see us scramble to safety. This week we face Cumbrians Crookland Casuals at Station Road for a 2pm kick off.

CROSTON FIGHT BACK SEES 2 POINTS DROPPED

06/11/10 - Hesketh Bank 4-4 Croston Sports Club

Following the recent wet weather the match referee was called in to inspect the pitch which he passed fit to allow the all important relegation six pointer' clash against local rivals Croston. The match saw the return of Jordan Smethurst and a couple of his team mates from Unibond side Burscough FC in collaboration between the two managers to give them some match action as they had not been involved in Burscough squads recently. They certainly made a difference with Phil Quirk slotting in at left back allowing Jimmy Green to move further up on the left hand side. Ross McDowell partnered John Ascroft up front. 13 minutes into the game and we were in dream world scoring three without reply! Jordan Smethurst opened the scoring after 5 minutes and then a brace from Ross McDowell put us in a great position. However any thoughts of a cricket score were dashed by a resolute Croston side who recovered to hit back with a goal on the half hour before adding a second from the spot shortly before the interval.

They then proceeded to dominate for long periods in the second half before Jordan Smethurst added his second with 10 minutes left to play and seemingly the points were in the bag. Croston reduced the arrears once again within a minute and then a great 25 yard strike into the top corner giving Karl Sutton no chance snatched a draw in injury time. In truth Croston deserved a point in a very entertaining match and we I'm afraid have to view this as two points lost after such a fantastic start to the match. We have a week off to think about this due to our bye in the Presidents Cup first round before we return to action with a difficult looking trip to Slyne-with-Hest the week after.

ANOTHER LATE HEARTACHE

30/10/10 - Hesketh Bank 1-2 Millom

On the same day that fellow strugglers Croston were thumped 4-0 away to bottom of the table Turton the 1st team marginally failed to score points on what can only be described as a missed opportunity.

The side was again missing players and saw new skipper Kevin Cox take place in midfield alongside Brian Livesey. Andy Cope slotted in at right back and the club welcomed back Craig Lambert to partner John Ascroft up front. The first 20 minutes saw the home side dominate proceedings but we got lucky when a Millom goal was dissalowed for offside. Our forward play was rewarded when Josh Brierley was brought down in the penalty area. Brierley subsequently slotted home the penalty to take his leading goal tally to 7. The remainder of the half played out with little to report. The backline seemed to have settled and looked in control of the useful Millom strikers.

The second half began as it ended. We created very little but did have some decent possession. Defensively we looked comfortable until a deflected shot fell at the feet of an unmarked Millom player who converted the strike to equalise for the Cumbrians. It got worse for the home side as late in the game Karl Sutton's goal kick was intercepted by a Millom striker and despite late tackles from both centre halves the ball nestled at the feet of the Millom number ten who hit home from just two yards.

As the final whistle went it was once again a case of so close yet so far. The positives are that earlier in the season when the first team recieved a destructive pasting by 13 goals to 4 in Cumbria, this 2-1 narrow defeat would have been accpeted. But with a settled side it is the fine line of mistakes and lack of concentration that have cost us. The second half was void of creativity with the strikers feeding off nothing but scraps and while we don't seem to be mentally capable of holding onto narrow leads a push for goals is a must. The side can be postive that slowly but surely the tide is turning and a belief in each other and the will to work hard and fight for every last point will see us overcome the challenge we now face. There are some good players in this squad and with the added zest of hard work and application their quality will begin to win games.

Next week the battle for survival continues against local rivals Croston at Station Road with a 2.00pm kick off. A huge game that I know all the lads can't wait to be involved in.

VILLA LATE SHOW STEALS THE POINTS

16/10/10 - Hesketh Bank 2-4 Wyre Villa

Once again the first 11 started the 90 minutes in a positive manner. Josh Norgate went through on goal and only the fact he was shooting with his wrong foot saved the blushes of the Wyre Villa back line. Our bright beginings would prove to be in vein as Wyre Villa's troublesome number 8 went straight through the middle of defence, rounded 3rd choice keeper Dave Ball and slotted home past a lone defender. Soon after Wyre found themselves 2 up when the same number 8 rode tackles from 3 Hesketh Bank opponents to score from close range. Despite this 10 minute capitulation the first 11 settled and continued were they'd left off before Wyre's score sheet additions. Our attacking intent payed off when Josh Brierley was downed inside the area, Brierly subsequently slotted home his 3rd penalty of the season. As the half time whistle blew the home team was certainly in the acendence.

The second half showed how comfortable and confident the first team could be. The back four seemed solid and settled (Number 8 being smartly marked) and our attacking players where starting to find well earnt space. The equaliser came from a rapidly in swinging Josh Norgate free kick that was glanced past the flapping Wyre keeper by Marc Pinckard's precise head. Now the game was all square and the home side where hungry for the points.

In an attempt to take all 3 points Nipper Burns switched the side to a 5-3-2, with the focus on attacking wingers to out man the back three of Wyre. What occured was a home side that dropped deeper and deeper, Wyre clawing their way back into the game with a simple gaining of territory. Their rewards came 10 minutes from time when a free kick from the right side found an unmarked Wyre striker and subsequently ended up nestled neatly in the far corner of Dave Ball's goal. A gutted home side tried to push forward but in this attempt we left ourselves vulnerable at the back and a Wyre counter attack over ran the desperate back 3 and finished the game with a 4th.

4-2 seemed harsh on the home side but once again poor marking for at least two of the goals cost us dearly. Next week's game is simply huge, a real 'six pointer' away at fellow strugglers Turton with a 3pm kick off.

LONG BALL BREAKDOWN AT BAC!

09/10/10 - BAC/EE Springfields 3-1 Hesketh Bank

The first team travelled the relatively short distance to BAC /EE Springfields based at the BAC Sports Ground in Preston. Manager Andrew Burns and players Andy Cope and Mark Harrison returning to the ground were they once played for the then BAC Preston. Tony Sergeant and Charlie Haynes returned to the team with Adam Birkby and Eion Bond being unavailable. There was also a first start for Tom Manby who partnered John Ascroft up front after impressing from the bench during the last couple of ga me s. The first 20 minutes saw us get off to a good start and we were rewarded when Morgan Dodgson scored a rare goal volleying home from close range from a corner. The home side hit back with a stunning left foot strike from 25 yards on the half hour which gave Karl Sutton no chance and then took the lead 5 minutes from the interval with a direct free kick from a similar distance.

The second half saw the home side extend their lead 10 minutes after the break when the ball broke free to an unmarked forward who had all the time in the world to pick his spot. We tried to get back into the game but didn't really trouble the big keeper who came and caught all of our efforts to get the ball in the box, the only real chance falling to John Ascroft who from close range couldn't get his shot away quick enough in the dying minutes. Wyre Villa at the Centenary Sports Ground next week with a 3pm kick off.

LATE DEMISE AS THE POINTS TRAVEL BACK WITH SLYNE

03/10/10 - Hesketh Bank 1-3 Slyne with Hest

Nipper Burns was forced to make three changes from the previous weeks victorious team, with Tom Meadows suspended Kevin Cox stepped back in at right back, Josh Norgate replaced veteran Charlie Haynes who was working and Morgan Dodgson retained his place at the back with Tony Sergeant injured. Slyne-with-Hest had lost just once in nine league games so far this season as they look to push for promotion to the premier division. Early exchanges were scrappy as both teams were guilty of giving the ball away and very little in the way of clear cut chances were made in the first half with both team's looking solid at the back.

Ten minutes into the second half the deadlock was broken when the visitors were awarded a free kick 5 yards outside the box and Karl Sutton was given no chance with a superbly struck free kick curled around the wall and into the corner of the net. The introduction of young substitute Tom Manby 20 minutes from the end brought about the equaliser when his strong run down the left and resultant cut back struck the outstretched harm of a Slyne defender. The resultant penalty was coolly stroked ho me by Josh Brierley. With 15 minutes to go a point would have been accepted but Slyne moved in for the kill and we were guilty of giving the ball away in midfield. Sure enough we were made to pay as the visitors sealed the victory with a two goal burst 10 minutes from the end.

Maybe a few weeks ago Slyne would have overrun us but they were made to work hard for their victory and we now look forward to next weeks short trip to Preston in the knowledge that we are capable of moving away from the bottom end of the table.

BRIERLEY DOUBLE EARNS THE POINTS

25/09/10 - Norcross & Warbreck 0-2 Hesketh Bank

Last week saw a settled side make a vast improvement on previous efforts in the League. This week the 1st team took their new found confidence to play Jekyll and Hyde side Norcoss & Warbreck who have won as many as they've lost without picking up a draw. The only two changes to last week's starting line up saw John Ascroft return up front with Marc Pinckard moving to right midfield. Adam Birkby replaced Kevin Cox at center half due to Kevin's work commitments.

The early exchanges proved to be a nervy time for the away side. Norcross found the gaps to play in behind the back four and beat the offside trap on more than one occasion. We held our own and rode our luck to keep the score at 0-0. After 15 minutes Tony Sergeant left the field with a hamstring injury and was replaced by Morgan Dodgson. As the first period continued we settled into our stride and began to create problems for the Norcross back line. John Ascroft and Eoin Bond were both on the end of last ditch tackling from the Norcross center backs. It was Bond who would play a huge part in the first goal as his cross box dribble resulted in him being brought to ground and a susequent penalty being awarded. The increasingly impressive Josh Brierley stepped up to the spot and with cool placement gave us a deserved 1-0 lead.

The second half showed our rapid improvement since the heavy 7-2 defeat at Longridge. Superb team spirit resulted in a blockade of a back four giving Norcross little to nothing to feed off. Led by the colossal Morgan Dodgson and aided by Adam Birkby, James Green and Josh Norgate (who replaced the injured Tom Meadows at the break) they built the foundation for us to take home the points. Add this to the brilliant and brave goalkeeping display from Karl Sutton it equalled a well earned clean sheet. As we moved the ball forward with pace and precision we looked the more likely to extend our lead. Eventually the second goal came from a Charlie Haynes corner. Josh Brierley (our tallest player) was left unmarked and he punished the home side with a solid header.

After we soaked up some more pressure the final whistle came as a welcome cause for celebration. After a shakey start to the campaign Andrew Burns seems to have found a squad with spirit, desire and the required quality to slowly move away from the bottom quarter of the table and progress as high as possible. Next week the new found optimism will be tested when Lancastrian side Slyne-with-Hest visit Station Road with a 3pm kick off

LEAGUE LEADERS GIVEN AN AMBER AND BLACK FRIGHT!

18/09/10 - Burnley United 3-0 Hesketh Bank

Just five members of last week's matchday squad survived to make the trip to league leaders Burnley United. The starting line up included several regualr reserve team players as Tom Meadows, Marc Pinckard, Eoin Bond, Tony Sergeant, Charlie Haynes and Zak Gibbs where all drafted into the squad.

The first 25 minutes gave the home side a scare as in their words we 'battered them' for the first half an hour. Unfortunately we conceded thanks to our own mistakes as lack of communication led to a turnover of possession in midfield and Burnley pounced, their striker cutting inside and 8 yards out smashing home the opener. 5 minutes of uncertainty followed and Burnely sniffed blood. They doubled their lead after some neat work on the corner of the 18 yard area saw a cross lead to a simple tap in, 2-0. As we composed we clawed our way back into the game. Jay Wright nearly marked his 1st team return with an outstanding header, only the crossbar would save the home side.

After a half time team talk of positive intent and improvement our struggling 1st team went out to try and win the second half. Marc Pinckard almost opened our scoring with a floating header that skimmed the outside of the post. After two convincing penalty shouts were turned down our luck was confirmed as bad when late in the second half an unfortunate goalkeeping error sealed the victory for Burnley. Karl Sutton however can hold his head high after a brave performance kept the Burnley strikers at bay.

At full time there was definate sense of dissapointment but not because we'd been soundly beaten, it was actually good to be dissapointed because away at the undefeated league leaders we felt unlucky not to take something from the game. Hopefully the squad can use this as a basis for improvement and start to move up the division one table. Next week we face a tough away trip to Norcross & Wabreck, with a 3pm kick off.

ANOTHER TONKING!

11/09/10 - Longridge Town 7-2 Hesketh Bank

Once again the 1st team have been comprahensively battered. A team littered with some of the village's most talented footballers were put to the sword by a Longridge side that was well organised and played to their sustantial strengths.

The 1st team travelled with just 12 men and for the second week running were left managerless by Andrew Burn's absence. Karl Sutton made his first team debut between the sticks and Morgan Dodgson took one step closer to his century of 1st team appearances. From early in the game we seemed incapable of keeping the ball as the midfield failed to support the the defensive line, and in turn the defensive line seemed happy enough to lump the ball straight down the throats of the welcoming Longridge centre halfs. It certainly wasn't a surprise to see Longridge go into the half time break 3 goals to the good.

The second half began in similar fashion seeing Longridge add to their lead. At 5-0 captain Steve Taylor was substituted after suffering an ankle injury. Longridge soon added a sixth after a top draw free kick that Karl Sutton had simply no chance of stopping. Suddenly a beaten 1st team began to play football. Adam Birkby looked particularly comfortable in playing probing passes into the midfield which was a stark contrast to the first half lump-a-thon. John Ascroft added to his early season tally with a neat side foot past the oncoming keeper. Slack marking gave Longridge a seventh from a corner and Ascroft sealed his second of the game after latching onto some rare slack defending from the home side.

This was another day to forget and after the first month of the season its safe to say that there have been too many days for all our senior sides that are best forgotten. As we move into the Autumn and settle back into a training pattern lets hope that results can start improving. There are several players at this football club who have worn the amber and black since they could kick a ball and yesterday they voiced their dismay at the early season displays. If you want to be part of this football club, wherever you're from, then save most of your Saturdays for it because if you don't you're letting down players and people who do.

Well done to those that played in this game, not for the result, not for the performance, but for being there.

Tony Sergeant

CUP EXIT AGAINST PREMIER LEAGUE POULTON

04/09/10 - Hesketh Bank 0-2 Poulton Town (Lancashire Shield)

On a lovely Autumn day the first team entertained Premier League team Poulton Town in the first round of the Lancashire Shield. The visitors who had not been to the Centenary Sports Ground for a few years commented on the excellent playing surface and general ground appearance. We made two changes from the previous week with Gavin White and David Marsh replacing Joe Middleton and Josh Brierley. The first half was very close with both sides playing good passing football making full use of the conditions. Despite this very few chances were created and both goalkeepers had few scares, however Poulton opened the scoring in the 35th minute when a great cross was not dealt with properly and Jimmy Green bundled over his opponent and the referee had no option but to award a penalty which was clinically despatched.

In the second period the game became more spread and open as we attempted to find an equaliser and with 20 minutes remaining John Ascroft eventually got clear but his goalbound effort was deflected away for a corner by a great late save block from a defender with the beaten keeper grateful. Poulton eventually secured passage into the 2 nd round and a visit to fellow Premier League opponents Lostock St. Gerards with the all important second goal as powerful header from a corner in the 85th minute gave Henry Heighton no chance. It's back to league action next week and a first visit to Longridge Town and a return to 3pm kick offs.

PLAYERS BACK, FIRST HOME POINTS OF THE SEASON

28/08/10 - Hesketh Bank 4-1 Mill Hill St Peters

Following last weeks debacle at Millom it was important that the team responded positively against a so far unbeaten Mill Hill St Peters from Blackburn . On a bright but windy day the team welcomed back the seven players who hadn't made the trip to Cumbria - Steve Taylor, Tony Hart, Adam Birkby, Henry Heighton, Kevin Cox, Joe Middleton and Tom Wharton. Facing the elements in the first half we kept the ball well and restricted the visitors to long range efforts which were handled well by Henry Heighton. After 20 minutes we were rewarded when a fine cross from the left by Jimmy Green caused havoc in Mill Hill's defence and Joe Middleton bundled the ball past the keeper with the help of a deflection to give us the lead which we comfortably protected up to half time.

Following the break we began to look dangerous and on the hour Joe Middleton added his second heading home at the far post. Adam Birkby added the 3rd ten minutes later also heading home from a corner. The visitors were handed a life line with an own goal when a cruel rebound off Kevin Cox gave Henry Heighton no chance. However in the dying minutes John Ascroft smashed home the 4th to make the final score 4-1 and secure the points. Next week sees a break from league action as we entertain Poulton Town from our Premier Division in the first round of the Lancashire Cup. Please note the earlier Kick Off time of 2pm.

13, VERY UNLUCKY FOR US

21/08/10 - Millom 13-4 Hesketh Bank

Only 4 players were available from the victorious team at Croston in midweek and a bare 11 travelled up to Cumbria to face Millom and it turned into a nightmare! The normal 2 hour journey in the minibus was extended to 3 hours after an accident on the M6. Arriving at the ground at 2.50pm gave the team no time to prepare and an injury to Matthew Dawson sustained on the minibus didn't help. The match kicked off 10 minutes late and within 15 minutes yet another new goalkeeper John Lewin had been beaten 3 times and been booked after conceding a penalty. John Ascroft and a penalty from Josh Brierley got us back into the game or so we thought! Millom quickly added two more but veteran Charlie Haynes hit back before Millom completed the first half scoring to go in at the interval 6-3 in front.

For the first 15 minutes of the second half it looked as though both teams had decided that the goalscoring frenzy of the first half was enough. However Millom then increased their lead and almost immediately a very rare Andy Cope header made the score 7-4. The home team then set about scoring with just about every attack they had scoring six more without reply in the final quarter of the match. This result was the biggest defeat the club has endured since joining the league. For the record we lost 12-1 in the last match our first season at Blackpool Wren Rovers in 1988. Some may say a day to forget I think we as a club need to remember this day and make sure it never happens again!!

I could say a lot more but I won't and I don't necessarily blame the players that made the trip!

MIDDLETON BRACE MEANS DERBY DELIGHT

17/08/10 - Croston Sports 2-3 Hesketh Bank

The first team travelled the short distance to face local rivals Croston Sports Club last night and both teams were looking for their first points of the season. Two more new signings were introduced, goalkeeper James Hawke and striker Joe Middleton. We started brightly and created 3 good opportunities early in the game but were unable to capitalize. Slowly Croston got into their stride and were eventually rewarded after 25 minutes taking the lead. Tom Wharton equalized from close range 10 minutes from the interval to send them teams into half time all square.

Joe Middleton opened his account for the club early in the second half as we once again controlled the game and should have put the game beyond doubt hitting the woodwork. However one of our ex club members David Hogg beat the offside trap and deftly looped the ball over the advancing James Hawke to equalize. Not to be outdone we quickly restored our lead with Joe Middleton adding his second with a neat finish to clinch the 3 points. Next up another trip to Cumbria as we face Millom on Saturday.

LATE PENALTY STEALS THE POINTS FOR CROOKLANDS

14/08/10 - Crookland Casuals 2-1 Hesketh Bank

The first team travelled to Cumbria with a depleted squad knowing that their opponents Crooklands Casuals had won their opening two games 7-0 and 5-2. Henry Heighton debutised in goal and two other new signings Gavin White and Ryan Wright boosted the squad along with Matthew Dawson from the reserves making a back three along side Adam Birkby superbly marshalled by skipper Steve Taylor with Andy Cope and James Green as the wide men. The opening exchanges clearly didn't go the way the home team would have hoped as the midfield trio of youngsters Ryan White, Gavin White and Josh Brierley got a grip of that area. It was only on the half hour when Crooklands eventually created a couple of chances but Henry Heighton pulled off two great saves to thwart them. Just when it looked as though the first half would remain goalless a corner was not cleared properly and the resulting cross found the head of an unmarked Crooklands player who made no mistake from close range.

Any thoughts that the floodgates would open for the Cumbrian side did not materialise and ten minutes after the interval Tony Hart who was partnering John Ascroft up front was bundled over just outside the box. Josh Brierley Beckham style' curled the ball round the wall past the stranded keeper into the top corner to equalise. Crooklands were clearly shaken but could not create any clear cut chances with Henry Heighton having little to do. The match became a bit more of a battle and the referee resorted to producing his yellow card at both sets of players. In the 87 th minute Charlie Haynes who had come on for the injured Adam Birkby stuck out his veterans leg and the referee had no option to award the home side a penalty. A relieved Crooklands side eventually took all three points but were made to work very hard for them. We had a shout of a penalty turned down and Andy Cope got a second yellow card way into injury time which was a little unnecessary.

Hopefully the lads can pick themselves up for Tuesday derby match at Croston.

PLENTY OF PROMISE - 0 POINTS!

10/08/10 - Hesketh Bank 1-3 Norcross & Warbreck

The 1st eleven are still looking for their first points of the campaign after another late collapse against a tidy opposition. For 70 minutes we looked fairly solid and secure helped in no small part by the returning Steve Taylor at the center of defence. Only a lofted free kick and a dubious challenge on goalkeeper Colin Salmon would dent the backline's confidence. John Ascroft secured his first goal of the new season with a confident finish after rounding the stranded goalkeeper.

After a very even second half it came down to seeing out the last 15 minutes. Unfortunately and in a very similar fashion to the previous Saturday (all be it with a different scoreline), the Amber and Blacks couldn't keep the towering Norcross players from heading home a pin point corner kick. A third was added in the dying minutes to secure all 3 points for the visitors.

With 3 games gone (2 for the 1st team and 1 for the Reserves) they have all been played out in similar fashion. All games have ended 3-1 with mainly late 2nd half poor performance after a competitive game. This might point ot the fact that both squads are very new. With time, patience and a continued belief in their own and team mates ability this may yet be a season for celebration. These are early days and its up to everyone to iron out the creases but the potential is certainly there for all to see.

Next up for the 1st team is a long trip north to Cumbrian pace setters Crookland Casuals

STUTTERING START FOR THE 1ST ELEVEN

07/08/10 - Hesketh Bank 1-3 Haslingden St Marys

After an uncertain preseason the opening fixture of the league campaign pitted us against relegated Hslingden St Marys at a sublime Station Road surface. It was obvious from the early exchanges that this was a typical Haslingden side. They were physical, competitive and on the whole a very big side. Despite the physical disadvantage we looked comfortable in possession and showed signs of a promising display.

Hopes of taking the lead were dashed when a long, high ball was headed backwards by young centre half Josh Norgate and over the stranded debutant keeper Colin Salmon. It would get worse before half time as Haslingden added a second. It was certainly not a one sided affair and just like in the early exchanges we looked as if we were ready to threaten. Unfortunately our progressive play never materialised and several false starts allowed Haslingden to sneak home a 3rd. A consolation penalty from Neil Hulme did little to dismiss the dissapointment.

While this was certainly not a promotion contending performance there is certainly no need for panic. With some good young players on display this very new side will need a few games to gel. With a couple more experienced additions to the line up in the pipeline Andrew Burns and assistant Danny Wilson must be confident in the improvement of this young squad.

Next up is Norcross & Warbreck at Station Road on Tuesday. Kick off is at 6.30pm.
